FUND FOR FREE THEATER

Permanently safeguarding The Public Theater's free programs.

The Fund for Free Theater will be New York City's first ever permanent fund aimed at protecting and evolving free theater initiatives. The Public is enormously grateful to the donors who have contributed to the Fund for Free Theater, which supports:

FREE SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK

A primary focus of the Fund for Free Theater will be Free Shakespeare in the Park, which embodies our mission to offer the highest quality work to the broadest possible audience, free of charge.

The Fund will support the many facets of Shakespeare in the Park that make it such a beloved, and accessible, New York tradition:

  • Improving entry with in person ticket distribution, virtual lotteries, and borough distributions
  • Enhancing accessibility by providing options for patrons who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind, or have mobility issues
  • Educational enrichment through partnerships with WNET and PBS to release Shakespeare in the Park productions and designing educational content based on the productions

MOBILE UNIT

Reaching audiences where they live by traveling to community centers, homeless shelters, correctional facilities, and parks across NYC, the Mobile Unit was conceived as a way to further break down the barriers to theater access. For over ten years, the Mobile Unit has traveled across the City, breaking down barriers and bringing tours to meet people where they are. The Mobile Unit has even traveled across the country, and is today viewed as a model by theaters nationwide of how to widen access and elevate the transformative power of the arts."

PUBLIC WORKS

Partnering with eight organizations across New York City, Public Works builds on the idea that community is where theater does its best work. The program invites members of communities from all five boroughs to take classes, participate in programming, attend shows, and be a part of the theater-making process. This extraordinary initiative culminates in ambitious, participatory productions each summer at The Delacorte Theater, where audiences get to experience the joy of seeing themselves represented on stage performing Shakespeare in the middle of Central Park."
