Originally from Kenya, Nyong’o is a recent graduate of the UCSD MFA program. While at UCSD, he was cast in the La Jolla Playhouse workshop production of the Tony Award-winning musical, The Outsiders, directed by Danya Taymor. Upon graduation, Nyong’o completed a run as “B” in Sanctuary City at Seattle Rep, directed by Desdemona Chiang. Akin to his upbringing between Southern California and Ghana, his work migrates seamlessly through genre and disciplines. His albums have topped the critics’ lists of the New York Times, NPR, Pitchfork, the Guardian, and Rolling Stone; his music videos lauded by SXSW, the UKMVAs, the Webby, and Camerimage awards.
